Microsoft Word Continue Table to Another Column

If merging the cells in one of the columns does not allow you to achieve what you are after, perhaps you need to use "newspaper" style columns that are set up via the Page Setup section of the Page Layout tab.

Hope this helps,

merging does not solve the problem because it is still impossible to create equal sized rows when the adjacent column has a number of rows that is not a factor of the number or rows I am trying to create (if that makes sense...).  I can manually create 5 rows in one column and 7 in the other, distribute the rows in one column to make them equal, but when I try to distribute the rows in the other column it gives me the error message, "Word cannot distribute the selected cells. You must select all cells on the rows to be distributed," even though I am selecting all the cells.

And newspaper style columns is not what I am looking for.  I am looking to use the table because I would like to use border off certain sections of my document and keep things as neat as possible.

Basically I am creating a template for inputting information and then applying borders.  This should be a simple thing but I can't seem to figure it out or find any information on the internet.  I don't even know what to search for when looking for a solution.

Basically what word is doing is creating rows in the adjacent column when rows are created in the other (they are not actually created but I think this is what word is doing in the background).  I need to overcome this issue.

If you would like to see what I am talking about try creating a single row 2 column table.  Split one column into 7 rows.  When you try to split the second column it will only let you split it into a number of rows that divides equally into the number of rows in the first column (in this case 7 rows is a prime number so your only option is creating 7 rows).

I have explored other options like creating tables within tables, but this is problematic in that I can't create borders the way I want to and also the inner table does not match up flush with the cell that it is contained in....

Would putting several wrapped tables side by side work? These tables would be completely independent of each other.

In theory this would work, assuming that I know exactly how I want everything laid out prior to inputting data.  The problem is that if for whatever reason I need more space or want to use bigger font in certain cells I would need to move all the tables in order to get them to line up right.  The reason I thought a single table would be best is because it would avoid all of these pitfalls.  It turns out that it has it's own problems (one that I think Microsoft should fix).

I am also beginning to think that there is something wrong with how word is executing things.  Going back to the 7 rows in one column and 5 in the other scenario, I came up with a solution, albeit a tedious one, that should have worked but didn't.  I created a table with 35 rows in each column and then merged 7 rows at a time in one column and 5 rows at a time in the other.  One column works fine but as soon as I start merging rows in the other column the table gets screwed up.  I did the same thing in excel but did not run into the same problems...

Anyhow... I can figure out how to accomplish what i am trying to do by other means but this problem is really bugging me.  So if anyone can figure it out please let me know.

I'm not sure I understand exactly what you are trying to accomplish.

Anyway, since you did this successfully in Excel, what you can do is embed an Excel worksheet in your Word document.
